Preventive Mastectomies in Very High Risk Women
There was a very interesting article on the front page of the New York Times on Sunday, September 16th.
Women who have a very strong family history of breast cancer, and who have the gene for breast cancer, have an 85% chance of getting breast cancer. Some of these women choose to have prophylactic or preventive double mastectomies.
I perform immediate breast reconstruction in these women. The reconstructed breasts can look very good and the patient is free of her terrible fear.
So even though it sounds drastic, this is a good option for some women.
