Breast Implant Replacement New York City

Should Breast Implants be Replaced every 10 years?

NEW YORK CITY, NY – It is NOT true that breast implants need to be replaced every 10 years. This is a very common idea, but it is not true.  If your breast implants look fine and feel fine, leave them alone.

In New York City, we tell breast aumentation patients who have SILICONE implants to have an MRI of the breasts every 2 or 3 years, because a silicone implant could be leaking and you would not know it .  The silicone gel stays in place whether the implant  shell is intact or not.

It has become a popular term on the internet, and it is short for “Man Boobs”. Man boobs is street talk for gynecomasatia, or breast development in men and boys.

Even though we learned about MOOBS only recently, our plastic surgery practice in Manhattan treats a lot of men with gynecomastia. Dr. Beraka wrote a text-book chapter on gynecomastia a long time ago. And because of this chapter and our big experience, we are referred many men with this problem.

You may visit our website www.drberaka.com to read some of Dr. Beraka’s thoughts on the treatment of MOOBS.

Breast Reduction Surgery Does Not Decrease Ability to Breastfeed

Posted in Breast Procedures at 2:25 pm by drberaka

An important study published in the July 2007 issue of the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery shows that breast reduction surgery does not interfere with breastfeeding.  This is a concern for many young women who are thinking of having a breast reduction.

Two groups were compared.  One group was 150 women with very large breasts who had no surgery.  The other group was 150 women who had very large breasts who then had breast reductions.  The study shows that breast feeding was equally successful in both groups.  This is very important new information.

INSURANCE COMPANY BY COURT TO PAY FOR GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY

Posted in Breast Procedures at 2:19 pm by drberaka

In April, the New York Supreme Court’s Appelate Division ruled by a 5-0 vote – that an insurer must cover a teenage boy gynecomastia surgery. This ruling upheld two lower court decisions that sided with the patient.

This patient was a 17 year old boy who had been teased by his classmates because of the full appearance of his chest. One of the judges involved called gynecomastia “an objective, tangible, and unusual source  of turmoil, more skin to clubfoot or cleft lip than to a large nose.”

Of course, gynecomastia can be a serious congenital deformity and its correction should absolutely be covered by insurance. This court decision is a very important precedent.

Breast Asymmetry

Posted in Breast Procedures at 3:24 pm by drberaka

Twenty years ago, Dr. George Beraka wrote a textbook chapter on breast asymmetry and he became known as an expert on this condition. Because of this textbook, he has operated on an unusually large number of young women who have one breast very different from the other.

Most women have a slight degree of breast asymmetry. But in about 10 % of women, the difference between the left and right breast is severe. In extreme cases, a teenager will be flat on one side and have a sagging D cup breast on the other. This can have a terrible emotional impact and sometimes young women are ashamed to seek help or don’t know that the condition is relatively common. Breast asymmetry can be corrected with surgery. Typically, the small breast is enlarged with an implant is lifted and reduced in size if necessary.

We perform this surgery on an outpatient basis in our accredited office operating room and the recovery takes about one week.
